Daimler's Sovereign is powered by the race-bred (but highly refined) 4.2-litre Jaguar six-cylinder 'XK' engine. Both the four-door and the new two-door coupé utilise the 'normal' 108.8in. wheelbase, but there is also a long-wheelbase four-door version. All Sovereign models share the specification improvements of the Daimler and Jaguar 12-cylinder models, with new grilles, instrumentation, central locking system, and improved insulation and carpeting materials. For the first time on a British car, fibre optic light cables are used to illuminate certain control areas.

Like its very close relative the Jaguar XJ12 Series Two, the four-door 12-cylinder Double-Six from Britain's oldest marque comes in long-wheelbase form only (112.8in.) for 1974. The all-independently-sprung Daimlers have revised grilles, bumpers, new ventilation and heating, doors reinforced against side-impacts, and there is a central door-locking system, New model for 1974 is the Double-Six two-door, an elegant coupé which uses the short wheelbase of 108.8in. The Daimlers differ from their Jaguar counterparts in seating and door trim.
