NA POŁUDNIOWEJ PÓŁKULI
Podczas gdy w Europie panują silne mrozy i drogi pokryte są grubą warstwą śniegu, na południowej pókuli jest lato. Nic więc dziwnego, że rok rocznie, pierwsze eliminacje do wyścigowych Mistrzostw Świata, odbywają się w styczniu, w Argentynie.
Rok 1956 przyniósł już trzy: Pierwszą był wyścig o Grand Prix Argentyny dla wozów formuły 1 (2500 cm sześc. bez sprężarki lub 750 cm sześc. ze sprężarką).
Do momentu wycofania się Mossa w 83 okrążeniu, toczył on na Maserati zaciętą walkę z Fangio, jadącym na Ferrari. Po wycofaniu się Mossa, Fangio ukończył wyścig niezagrożony. Ponieważ jednak miał defekt na początku wyścigu i w 20 okrążeniu zmuszony był wziąć wóz zawodnika Musso, dlatego z tej eliminacji liczy mu się do mistrzostw tylko połowa punktów.
Wynik ten jest jeszcze niezatwierdzony, bowiem złożono oficjalny protest, zarzucający zawodnikowi Fangio obcą pomoc z jakiej korzystał po „wyskoczeniu” z trasy, bo i to mu się przydarzyło.
Na drugiej i trzeciej pozycji sklasyfikowali się Behra oraz Hawthorn.
Tak więc w punktacji do mistrzostw świata prowadzi Behra - 6 pkt. natomiast Fangio (?), Musso i Hawthom mają po 4.
Wytwórnia Ferrari wysłała do Argenyny całą gamę wozów wyścigowych. Obok dobrze znanych 4 cylindrowych modeli Super Squalo (zbiorniki paliwa z boku obok siedzenia kierowcy) przygotowana była nowa wersja tego typu, różniąca się umieszczeniem zbiornika z tyłu wozu.
Najciekawsze jest jednak połączenie podwozia Ferrari Squalo z widlastym 8 cylindrowym silnikiem Lancia. Wreszcie ostatnim typem jest zmodyfikowana Lancia. Zmiany polegają na zastosowaniu tylnego zawieszenia Ferrari, zmniejszeniu bocznych zbiorników, a dodaniu jednego z tyłu wozu.
Druga eliminacja to rewanż wozów Maserati, dla której 1000 kilometrowy wyścig wozów sportowych wygrała para Moss - Mendetigury, kończąc wyścig o dwa okrążenia przed Ferrari, prowadzonym przez Gondebieu'a i Hill'a. Na trzeciej pozycji uplasowali się Maserati Behry i Gonzalesa. Obydwaj ci zawodnicy startowali po raz pierwszy po długiej przerwie spowodowanej wypadkami.
Ostatni wyścig, z serii rozgrywanych w Argentynie, Mendoza Grand Prix, został wygrany przez Fangio na wozie zespołu Ferrari z przeciętną 136,33 km/godz. Drugim był Stirling Moss na Maserati z różnicą 38,6 sek. Moss na początku wyścigu zakręcił się w kółko lecz szybko odzyskał utraconą pozycję, nawiązując walke z Fangio.
Trzecie i czwarte miejsce uzyskane zostało również na Maserati przez Behrę i Mendetiguy'a, a piątym był Collins na Ferrari.
