When the new R-2 was introduced February 8, 1969, Subaru took 25,000 orders for the car in one month. Sales began in August of that year.
The FF-1 was introduced in Japan March 1.

There was no one happier than Fuji Heavy Industries, whose latest 360 car, the Subaru R2, was climbing up the sales ladder at a very rapid rate. It is Fuji's 411 VW to the micro beetle, and offers mostest interior dimensions in a market where everybody else is claiming the most. Rear mounted aircooled 2-stroke twin propels this tiny projectile to velocities over 70 m.p.h. with brisk acceleration. Fuji had also introduced a 4-door Sports version to the Subaru FF1 saloon range, which was powered by a twin carburetter 77 h.p. flat four. The Subaru FF1 2-door saloon is now sold in the U.S.A. as the Subaru Star.
