Japan

• December: Annual sales volume in Japan tops 1 million vehicles.
The largest Japanese automobile manufacturer offers a wide range of passenger, delivery and truck vehicles as well as buses of all sizes. Only in the typical for Japan, tax-favored 360 cc mini-cars class the company is not concerned. Smallest car is the popular Toyota Publica. This model appeared in April 1969 in a completely new form. Next model is the Corolla, first released in 1964 followed by the mid-size model Corona in various versions with 1.5 and 1.6-litre engines. Further up is the prestigious Crown 2300, while the flagship model, the Toyota Century with V8 alloy engine and air-sprung front wheels, is not intended for export. All Toyotas are very conservative in the technology and design.

Tokyo report
By contrast, Toyota had their eyes on the future. Their star exhibits were three experimental cars. EX I was a futuristic interpretation of the 2000GT with a crushed canopy with a tinted roof glass, and a tiny adjustable wing on the rear, whose effects were rather dubious. Mechanical details were not revealed, but it appeared that the car had a running chassis and the engine compartment could probably take a detuned version of the Group 7 dohc 5-litre V8. There were three variations of the EX II city runabout, which was the work of Racing Director Jiro Kawano! This tiny two-seater would not, however, take his 540 h.p. V8, and was powered by a 2-stroke 2-cyl. engine located in the rear. Type B EX II was a pretty town car with superb view ali around, while two others were stripped models tailored to meet resort and airport uses respectively. EX III was a way-out and non functional creation -supposed to be the GT of the 1980's. Toyota also showed their secret electronic projects-blackboxes which control two types of automatic transmissions, fuel injection system and an anti-lock brake device. On the production side, Toyota now offer a twin cam 140 b.h.p. version of the Corona Mark II 1900, the GSS coupe capable of nearly 125 m.p.h. As with any high performance Toyota, it is most comprehensively equipped with radio, heater, collapsible steering column, full carpeting and clock.
