The 2000 received fuel injection in 1979.
A turbodiesel version was introduced in late 1979, the Alfetta Turbo D, whose engine is supplied by VM Motori. Apart from a boot lid badge, the Turbo D is equipped and finished like the top-of-the-line 2000 L both outside and inside. The turbodiesel, a first on an Alfa Romeo's passenger car, is of 2.0 litres and produces 82 bhp.
In June another engine update arrived and the Alfasud Sprint became the Alfasud Sprint Veloce. Thanks to double twin-choke carburetors (each choke feeding a single cylinder) and a higher compression ratio engine output increased to 86 bhp and 95 bhp.

Some minor revisions, including a revised engine with new camshaft profiles and a change to mechanical-and-vacuum ignition advance, saw the 2.0-litre redesignated the Alfetta GTV 2000L. Autodelta also introduced a limited edition 2.0-litre turbocharged model, named Turbodelta, of which 400 were made for FIA Group 4 homologation. This version uses a KKK turbo which push power up to 175 PS (129 kW). The car also received a modified suspension layout. This is the first Italian petrol production car with a turbocharger.
Power cames from an all-new 2.5 V6 engine which generates 158 bhp at 5600 rpm using a total of six carburettors and a single, belt driven camshaft in each cylinder head. Power steering, power windows, central locking, electric wing mirrors and a 25% limited slip differential are standard, making the Alfa 6 competitively priced compared to similar saloons where such equipment typically is a costly extra. The car is also designed to set new standards in safety; for example it features a shock sensor in the boot which would cut off the fuel supply in the event of a crash.
