Alpine Renault berlinette Tour de France
Alpine Renault berlinette Tour de France
The star of last year Paris Motor Show on the Alpine stand was a prototype with the all-new, high-performance V-8 engine. Except for the introduction of optional light alloy wheels no changes were made to the range. This year the company sold a total of 358 cars, including 330 Berlinette (87 '1100', 224 '1300' and 19 '1500'). At the end of the year the 1500 version was withdrawn from sale. Within two years, 42 were sold.
Renault took control over the competition department.
Zastosowano szersze opony, co wymusiło poszerzenie błotników i skrócenie bocznych listew ozdobnych. Dzięki przekonstruowaniu tylnego zawieszenia udało się wygospodarować więcej miejsca we wnętrzu. Zmiany te dotyczą wszystkich modeli z wyjątkiem 1100. Silnik 1500 zastąpiony został przez jednostke o pojemności 1,6 litra z Renault R16 TS.
Jesienią rozpoczęto prace przy budowie nowej fabryki, która pozwoli Alpine przekroczyć barierę 1000 samochodów rocznie.

Alpine A-220 during tests at Le Mans in April.
Mimo powiększenia pojemności skokowej silnika z 2986 do 2996 cm³ osiąga on moc tylko 312 KM.
Mechanicy szybko wymienili jedną z przednich tarcz hamulcowych. Kierowcy skorzystali z okazji aby sięzmienić i to Mauro Bianchi opuścił boksy.
Cztery z pięciu wystawionych dojechały do mety wygrywając w klasyfikacjach ekonomiczności i osiągów.
This year the Alpine team began the season with improvements to the new A-220 which now has the three-litre V8 engine. In the spring the car received a new aerodynamic body, and in April was ready for test drives on the track at Le Mans. Although the engine capacity was enlarged from 2986 to 2996 cc it retains the power of only 312 hp. The prototype is able to do one lap of the track at an average speed of 210 km/h, which seems to be insufficient to overcome rivals such as the Ford GT 40 or Porsche.
Postponed by three months the 24h Le Mans race took place on 28th of September. This delay gave Jean Rédélé more time to prepare his cars for the event and he was able to line-up four brand new A-220's. Unfortunately only one managed to cross the finish line scoring 8th place in the general rankings. On Sunday morning Patrick Depalier stopped at the pit for refuelling and to check the brakes. Mechanics quickly replaced one of the front discs. Drivers took the opportunity to change and it was Mauro Bianchi who left the paddocks. He probably forgot to re-balance the brakes. The car swerved abruptly, hit the barrier and all 120 litres of fuel exploded. Miraculously the driver managed to escape the car but with severe burns. Grandsire had an accident too and all four cars suffered multiple technical problems.
