C 111 - prototype
Germany
Podczas jesiennego salonu we Frankfurcie konserwatywna firma zaskoczyła publiczność futurystycznym coupé C 111 z plastikowym nadwoziem przynitowanym, a częściowo przyklejonym do stalowej ramy przestrzennej, stanowiącej podstawę całej konstrukcji i centralnie umieszczonym, trójkomorowym (3x600 cm³) silnikiem Wankla wyposażonym w bezpośredni wtrysk paliwa, o mocy 280 KM. Mimo stanowczych zaprzeczeń przedstawicieli firmy, powszechnie spekulowano na temat podjęcia produkcji tego samochodu.
- 15 - 26 January: The coupé models 250 C and 250 CE (W 114) make their show debut at the Brussels Motor Show.
- August 6: The 250,000th Mercedes-Benz petrol injection car rolls off the assembly line at the Sindelfingen plant. In this month 15 years previously, production began of the 300 SL, the first production car to be powered by a petrol injection four-stroke engine.
- September 11 - 21: The C 111 test car with three-rotor Wankel engine and the 3.5 liter V8 engined 300 SEL 3.5, 280 SE 3.5 Coupé and 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet are launched at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt.
The C 111 experimental car is fitted with a 280 hp three-rotor Wankel engine and a plastic body.
- September: In addition to the new Mercedes-Benz car models a further body variant of the mid-range series W 114/W 115 is released for sale: the four-door extended saloon with longer wheelbase, designed as a 7/8-seater and offered in the model variants 220 D and 230.
280 SE 3.5 coupe and cabriolet (W 111): differs externally only through a wider and lower grille. Production from August.
300 SEL 3.5 (W 109): Introduced in September 1969 as a successor to the 300 SEL 2.8 liter engine. Air suspension.
