Peugeot 1970

504 Coupé & Cabriolet

204 Coupé and Cabriolet received the dashboard of the new 304 in 1969 only to be withdrawn in 1970, replaced by similarly bodied 304 equivalents. 304 Coupé and Cabriolet versions replaced their 204 forerunners in March 1970
404 Super Luxe and 404 (8 CV) Comfort were discontinued, leaving the Grand Touring, Break and Familiale models to continue with petrol and diesel engines. The Grand Touring receives chrome headlight rims and reversing lights as standard. Wing-mounted indicator repeaters are no longer fitted. New XC7 engine fitted de-tuned to 73 hp (68hp-DIN), but with torque equivalent to XC6.
504 received a new four-cylinder 1971 cc engine, rated at 96 bhp (carburated) and 104 bhp (fuel-injected), and a four-cylinder 2112 cc diesel rated at 65 bhp. The 1796 cc engine remain available. In September an estate was added, featuring a higher rear roof, lengthened wheel base and solid rear axle with four coil springs. It was joined by the 7-seat "Familiale", which has all its occupants facing forward in three rows of seats.
£1,195 (incl. P.T.)
Developed from the smaller-engined 204, the Peugeot 304 is a front wheel drive saloon with a 1.3-litre overhead camshaft engine which is not only mounted transversely at the front, but inclined as well, to minimise height and assist with weight distribution. There is a remarkably large boot for a 1.3-litre car, suspension is coil spring all-round, and for 1971 an alternator has been standardised in place of the earlier dynamo. French 304s have steering column gearchanges, but imported cars have sporty floor levers. The disc/drum brakes are power-assisted.
£1,594 (incl. P.T.)
The renowned 504 from one of the oldest automobile factories in the world, was voted Car of the Year by an international motoring journalists' panel in 1968, and for 1971 has its engine size increased. The cubic capacity goes from 1796 c.c. to 1971 c.c. by increasing the bore size of the four-cylinder 4 m.m. As before, the 504 is available with carburettor or fuel-injection, the former now developing 98 (SAE) h.p. (was 87), and the latter 110 (SAE) h.p. (was 103). As well as the handsome saloon model with tapered-rectangular headlights there are Coupé and cabriolet versions.
